[#spoiler=Premise]Fourteen coworkers find themselves trapped in one of their workplace’s many departments after a few among them go rogue. With the aid of a ‘benevolent’ entity, the normal employees are given a chance to root out the traitors and save their own lives. Will they be able to discern who in the group is out to get them? Or will they lose themselves under the pressure? They still have a job to do, after all.
It's time for another Black Fable! The game will place you in the shoes of a poor, poor employee who puts up with freakish horrors and terrible working conditions just to make ends meet. Except they're not really even able to leave their job. It's just that important!
Here's a quick bit of important info:
[#spoiler=Back of the game case factoids:]14 Sinners trapped in a fight for survival! Although this game can likely accommodate 16 instead, if enough people are interested! Sadly, odd numbers in between or around those won't work with this specific setup.
Create your own character, not chained down by blood ties and family relations, but instead you share a common goal with your coworkers- Surviving through living hell each day.
Like the previous, character death isn't the end! The key incident taking place in BF5 will go through three cycles, at the start of each everyone is brought back to life for another go!
Information is the name of the game! But everything has its price... Pay for the files of specific employees to gather intel on their background and some relevant in-game traits!
The game takes place in a depressing urban society. Work to live to live to work. An endless cycle.
But people somehow manage to keep themselves as happy as they can, day to day, despite the odds. Despite living conditions for the average person being terrible. Despite every corner of this would-be utopia being riddled with drug abuse, corruption, and weirdos with strange and often dangerous hobbies.
Everyone carries on and copes in their own way. Sometimes the little things are what keep you going.
There’s no way around this, Black Fable 5 is heavily inspired/based around Lobotomy Corporation, a fantastic game made by Project Moon that you can buy on Steam right now. It’s incredible. Would absolutely recommend.
You don’t need to be familiar with the game and its world, I’ve done my best to explain everything in detail here. If you are familiar, then understanding the setting should be significantly easier.
Player characters are all employees of a big company, 'Lunares Corporation' (Referred to commonly in-universe as L-Corp). The corporation prides itself on its clean energy, and the fact that its entire facility functions as a space station, orbiting Earth.
Lunares prides itself as a benevolent company set on providing for the Earth and its people, handling a massive amount of society's energy production. While that's true to an extent, the price paid for abundant, clean energy has to come somewhere... at the expense of its employees.
Each day, employees are expected to perform work, in order to generate energy. This 'work' involves close study and interaction with various mystical and often monstrous creatures. (Think something like the SCP Foundation, if you know about it.) Once energy is generated, its filled into energy cells and either sent back to Earth, or used to power the space station.
While this 'work' is often stressful and dangerous for the employees, this aspect of the world is not very important to the gameplay of BF5. All that you REALLY need to know is that your character will be expected to interact with these beings, dubbed "Abnormalities" with some level of efficacy. However, it's strongly encouraged to read the Employee Handbook written out later in this thread.
[#spoiler=Gameplay Info:]The Black Fable part of this game begins one day when four of the employees working at Lunares go rogue, for reasons that can be determined for each character privately. After a misstep in their plan to sabotage LC, the department where the incident took place locks down, trapping anyone who happens to be inside, and the game begins. With the aid of a mysterious Abnormality, four members trapped in the department have become its Apostles, creating the 'Mafia' faction of this game. The rest of the players will be the 'employees' faction.
Characters are all assigned to one of seven sins, at random. Each sin can only be assigned to two individual players.
The game has seven power roles. It will be unknown to the players how these roles are split amongst the Apostles and Employees.
However, each of the roles is assigned to one of the seven sins, at random. Those of a sin that lack a role are considered "Vanilla." (Or a custom term if I come up with one before the game begins.)
In short, there are 7 players with roles, and 7 players who are "Vanilla." Each sin has one vanilla player and one role-having player assigned to it.
Additionally, each Cycle (“Arcs” in previous BFs), one of the Vanilla Employees will be assigned a special role. Information on how this role operates will be made public near the start of the game. Dubbed the "Keyholder," (or VIP if you prefer) this special Employee has a significant impact on the game.
Instead of depending on how many members of each faction survive to the final night, BF5’s conditions for winning each Cycle rely on the Keyholder.
If the Keyholder survives until the end of the Cycle, the Employees will be considered to have 'won' the Cycle, earning an additional chance to seek out and condemn the four Apostles during the final phase of the game.
If, at any time, the Keyholder dies during a Cycle, then the Apostles will be considered to have 'won' the Cycle, denying the previously mentioned boon from the Employees.
The winning faction is made public at the end of a Cycle, but before the fourth phase. Phases of the game are explained below in detail.
The game is split into four distinct phases, that each happen across the three Cycles. After the final Cycle ends, there will be a special phase consisting of the final confrontation between the Employees and Apostles.
The game begins with the Dusk Phase.
[#spoiler=Dusk Phase]The Dusk Phase is the equivalent of regular night in the previous games, where all role actions take place. Every player with an action must submit one before the time limit, or else their action will be randomly selected. This is when the factional kills happen, and all that fun stuff.
Following the Dusk Phase is the Dawn Phase.
[#spoiler=Dawn Phase]The Dawn Phase is the equivalent of the voting phase in past games. Here, the victims of the Dusk Phase are revealed, and players are given an opportunity to discuss anything they wish, ending with a vote to lynch one of the still living employees. Abstaining is not an option. Once an employee is lynched, the Dawn Phase ends.
After the Dawn Phase is the Noon Phase.
[#spoiler=Noon Phase]The Noon Phase is when the employees go to work. Employees must place a vote for the four employees they'd prefer to send to work on abnormalities, to generate energy for their locked off facility. If no vote is entered before the limit or no consensus is reached, the employees will be randomly selected. Sinners can vote for themselves, and for the sake of everyone's time and sanity, they can vote during the Dawn Phase as well. Though if one voted for the lynched Sinner, they should consider changing their vote.
Each Sinner normally generates 2 energy from a successful day of working. The energy is stored for use later in the Midnight Phase.
The Apostles, however, do not share the energy they earn with the Employees, lowering the amount of energy the Employees have to use during the Midnight Phase.
During the Noon Phase, players are expected to send in their Dusk Phase actions, if applicable. Failure to do so within the time limit will result in your action being randomized.
After the Noon Phase ends, another Dusk Phase begins, continuing in this fashion until the end of the current Cycle.
The fourth and final phase of a Cycle is the Midnight Phase, occurring after the final Dusk Phase.
[#spoiler=Midnight Phase]The Midnight Phase is akin to the Reckoning Phase of BF4, where players are given a chance to learn valuable info about the other players and mechanics revolving around the power roles present in the game.
Under normal circumstances, the role list will slowly reveal more and more information about each role in each of the game's three Midnight Phases.
The Midnight Phase is also where the Employees will be given a chance to spend the energy they generated during the Noon Phase.
Sinners who have survived until the end of the Cycle, regardless of their affiliation, can vote to spend energy to uncover information on one of the Sinners in the department. One purchase will reveal flavour text about the Sinner, as well as that Sinner's Sin.
A second, more expensive purchase can be made after the first, revealing more flavour and lore about the Sinner, as well as learning if the employee possesses a special role or not.
Regardless of how much energy the Employee faction possesses during the Midnight Phase, only four purchases may be made per cycle.
After the Midnight Phase, all employees are revived, and a new Cycle begins.
Once the third and final Midnight Phase has ended, it will extend into a White Midnight.
[#spoiler=White Midnight]The White Midnight, unlike the Midnight Phase, consists of all Sinners, rather than the ones who have survived until the end of the last Cycle. Those who have previously died will be brought back to life to participate.
Sinners are given five guesses, with additional guesses earned on Cycle victories, to determine who the four Apostles are among the fourteen sinners, with a majority vote.
Once a Sinner is voted upon, they will be ‘condemned,’ and their Sin, Role and Affiliation will be made public.
If the condemned is an Apostle, they're no longer able to vote to reveal the traits and sins of other Sinners.
If the condemned is an Employee, they can continue to discuss and vote to condemn other sinners.
If every Apostle is correctly guessed, the game ends in an Employee victory. If even a single Apostle is not condemned, the game ends in an Apostle victory.
If, during the game, the above is deemed to be too unbalanced or too in favour of one faction over the other, these rules may be modified.
If you're interested in playing, then express interest in the thread here! Feel free to ask any questions as well, some of this might be confusing! Though a lot of it might make more sense in practice, it's never a bad thing to be prepared!
Once the requisite amount of players have been met, I can send out roles and such to everyone. Characters can be made before that, however! It's also encouraged to build relationships before the game begins. Details about character creation and and guidelines to follow will be in the following post, but remember, you all work the same job at the same time!
The game is projected to begin on June 8th, It's changed! We have a full cast of players now too! Thanks to everyone for signing up!
