" I'd offer you all free boosters or something but I don't know if my grandpa would like giving away a bunch of stock like that, or well he'd probably be fine with it, he'd be glad I'm making a bunch of friends, or, well, I hope I am, but it'd still be a lot and I don't know if you'd be interested or care about something like that..." Su-Ah came back from her meat trance for a bit. "Hmm, well, I don't know what a booster is, but I'd accept a little card with some cute monsters on it any day! Hehehe." She thought about what mikoto said, fascinated by their analogy. "Oh, well, I would certainly like to learn more about the sword someday, Mikoto. I think that would be fun. It's just my brother who always does things on impulse, haha. Mom didn't really like the sword if I'm being honest... maybe she would find it more acceptable if she knew more about it." Su-Ah shrugged and continued feasting

"I just prefer darkness. I feel it gives me a better communion with the dead, for they are swallowed in the great darkness forever." Isadora shrugged, taking another tiny and perfect bite of beef. "I must say you have a very fascinating talent, Faye. I do love a good mystery so if you ever need any paranormal assistance, please let me know. I would charge a very fair fee for any services. But if you share your skincare routine with me, I can waive the fee for your first request." She said genuinely and politely. "Oh. I do what everyone else does, I guess. With my skin." she turned to look down at her empty plate, absent mindedly turning a fork in her hand. "You know, sun screen, I have to carry a parasol out during the day... It's kind of a pain."

Calvin gladly enjoyed the cowboy chili and the cornbread that he get to have as a meal. Delicious.
"Well, it's not close to what my folks at hum makes, but it'll do." He said as he takes a bite of his cornbread.

Yves's eyebrows shoot up in the middle of Su-Ah's sentence, though it's a little hard to tell because of her messy bangs hanging in her face. "Oh, a, uh, booster is a pack of cards. They're called booster packs but most people don't really say that and just call 'em packs..."I... think it's cool, that your family runs a business, I mean. Too."

The dinner, last-minute though it was, was excellent and enjoyed by all. It was a great way to kick off the school year; Kameron hoped this positive energy was a portent for how the rest of it would go.
Still, all things must pass, and too soon the food was gone. Kameron thanked those involved, in particular Yugi, and told everyone to reconvene back at classroom 1-A in two hours so they could finish the orientation session. In the meantime, they were free to explore the school, check out their bedrooms and generally settle in to their new home for the next few years. Everyone split up, their varied interests taking them to locations all across the school.
Eventually they made their way back to classroom 1-A. People chattered about what they'd seen and done, and the room's energy quickly returned to how it had been previously. Soon however Kameron cleared his throat and looked around at the assembled students. "Have any of you seen Isadora? We're long past the meeting time and she's still not shown up." It didn't seem like anyone had. "Well, this won't do. Come on, we'd all better go look for her. You all stick with me! I don't want anyone else wandering off."
Everyone began searching the school, methodically sweeping the rooms in groups. They couldn't find Isadora in the west wing, not even in her room, nor the east. They wound up back in the main foyer, some growing increasingly concerned. There was only one place left to search at this point, though it was hard to imagine why she'd be there.
The main foyer was excessively ostentatious, with a giant upper-body statue of Leonardo da Vinci dominating the room. The statue was built into a half-cylinder structure that extended up all the way to the ceiling: an elevator, which would take them up to the principal's office. The office was at the very pinnacle of the school, occupying far too much space. It was here that the group went to check next, all bundling into the needlessly-spacious elevator and riding it up.
The elevator opened up to a short corridor, with a few chairs on either side for people to wait on. The door at the far end was shut, and when Kameron went to open it, he found it was locked too. Something wasn't right. Every room, even the principal's office, was supposed to be open today for the tour. "Stand back, everyone," he said gravely, taking a few steps back. "Hopefully I'm just overreacting here," he continued, before charging at the door and throwing all his weight behind his shoulder at it.
[#spoiler=The Principal's Office] As the door burst open, knocking over a small cabinet that had been blocking it, a sharp, irony smell rushed out of the room inside. Kameron stumbled to a halt, horrified by the scene before him. "What the..."
Isadora, sitting gracefully underneath her propped-up umbrella, was surrounded by a large runed circle painted on the floor in her own blood. Her wrists were bleeding heavily: it seems she had cut herself deeply to acquire the ink for her canvas. The knife she had used to do so was now embedded firmly in her chest, with her hands still wrapped tightly around the grip. She was smiling unsettlingly, but there was no longer any light in her eyes. She was dead.
Chapter 1 "What the fuck?" "Oh my God!" "Wow, what a magnificent scene!" There was a pause as everyone turned to stare at Su-Ah, her eyes sparkling as she took in the macabre sight. "What? That girl, she was hiding a really artistic side! Just look at this!" Everyone looked. Ige, finally unable to hold it in, threw up. Kameron regained his composure. "Get back outside, everyone. Hawk, call the police." He barked out a few orders, then stepped inside the room, intending to check on Isadora's condition. However, the moment his foot made contact with the floor, a bright light suddenly engulfed the scene, forcing everyone to shut their eyes and avert their gazes. The ground beneath their feet started shaking violently; Ige stumbled and then slipped in his own patch of vomit. Others were knocked off their feet too, and they could hear objects tumbling and breaking inside the office. Then, with one last seismic thump, the shaking abruptly stopped and the light faded. Everyone waited for their eyes to readjust, with people groaning or freaking out as they got back to their feet. [Twin demons theme: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcMz3aAZDv4]"Well well well! Interesting group we got this time, huh Zofra?" a deep, gravelly and thoroughly unpleasant voice spoke up from inside the office. "...They... are adequate," a second voice, softer and somehow hard to grasp, replied, their speech a little awkward. As their vision returned, everyone saw that two monstrous beings which definitely hadn't been there moments earlier were standing before them. They wanted to react, but everyone was paralysed, whether by fear or by something more supernatural. The two demons had their full, uninterrupted attention. "I can feel some powerful life energy from some of them," the first demon to speak continued, eyes flicking from person to person as he examined his haul. He was as much of a brute as his voice suggested: muscular, heavily scarred and carrying a warped flail in his one hand. His skin was red, and he had long, broken horns protruding from his skull. He was wearing restraints on his upper body and mouth, though it didn't seem to be doing much to tone down his personality. He was, unquestionably, a demon. [#spoiler=Aardok]
"They are... too... bright," the second said, their body moving rhythmically as they breathed. This one wasn't anything like the first. They had far too many arms, and their black, oily skin made it seem like they could disappear into a shadow if you took your eyes of them for even a moment. They weren't wearing any clothes, but didn't have anything to cover up. Their mouth was exposed, revealing sharp, monstrous teeth, but their upper head was covered by a metal restraint of some kind, concealing their eyes. In almost every way, they were an opposite to the first demon; it wasn't even clear if 'demon' was the right word for them. [#spoiler=Zofra]
"Hey, your loss," the first demon quipped, finishing his visual inspection of the group. "Now then, you're probably wondering what this is all about? Thanks to the death of the little miss back there, you've all been bound to a contract with us, the Demon Lords of the Chaos Realm! I'm Aardok, and the weird one next to me is my other half, Zofra. We like to call this little situation... the Contract Game. "Now, see, this game's pretty great! You guys get magical powers, and all you need to do to earn them is kill each other! Win-win, am I right? A win for me, too, as I get stronger every time one of you shmucks kills someone. Your life energy is so delectable, you wouldn't believe. "It's a simple system, really. You guys all have a level of 'Sin', currently at level 1. The higher your Sin, the more spells you have access to. Whenever someone is killed, everyone's Sin goes up a level! Until you do manage to do the deed, though, you're stuck here with us in the Chaos Realm. Want out? Kill someone and get away with it! Then we'll let you go, back to your own world, taking your newfound magic powers with you! Don't worry if your spells seem a bit weak to start out with. Given enough time - a few years, maybe - you'll get better and better. Eventually you'll be slinging spells like the best of 'em! "The Game continues like this, with you all murdering each other, until there's at most two of you left. Then the Game is officially over, and the last few survivors can run on home. I wouldn't bank on escaping this way, though! You're much more likely to be killed than be a pacifist survivor. Aim for those kills, that's the way to do it!" The paralysed players stared in disbelief at Aardok as he explained all this. It was a lot to take in, but he rushed through it like he'd already explained this a hundred times. "How...ever, there is an... opposing system. To Sin. You have, collectively... 'Innocence'," Zofra explained haltingly. "Form bonds... or refute evil. Innocence will increase. If some...one is killed, there... will be a trial. Expose the killer... they will be sentenced. 666 years of servitude, to us. But if... you fail... one of you, shall take their place. 666 years. Then, the... killer will, escape. It is my wish... that you all focus on Innocence. Rather than Sin. Maintain... the balance. Of the Chaos Realm. Do not let... my brother, get too strong." "Yeah yeah, the boring stuff. Come on, they want to hear about the magic!" Aardok butted in. [#spoiler=Magic Explanation] Everyone starts at Sin level 1. Each level of Sin grants access to higher levels of spells. Sin increases every time someone is killed during a Contract Game you are in. At will, you can bring up a status window that only you can see. This displays your Sin level, the spell list as well as other useful details. Spells are cast using Spell Points (SP). You all have 100 SP. SP is restored after a full night's rest. Level 0 spells cost 10 SP. Lower-level spells cost 40 SP, and higher level spells cost even more. To cast a spell, raise your dominant arm and clearly chant the spell's name. Spells generally have two modes. You choose which mode you are using when casting the spell. You can only pick one mode at a time. Only one spell can be cast at a time. Unless otherwise specified, all spells last their full duration. They cannot be dispelled early. With practice, you become a better spellcaster. You gain more SP, your spells grow stronger and gain new effects, and you even become able to circumvent restrictions in the spellcasting system. However this is a process that won't show results for at least a few years. For the purposes of this game, players have 100 SP and spells work exactly as stated in the spellbook. (The list of spells can be found on the main post of this thread.)
"Form... bonds," Zofra said. [#spoiler=Free Time Events (FTEs) and Innocence] Once per chapter, you can form a 'bond' with another player, creating a private conversation with them. FTEs last for just one chapter. Every time you initiate two FTEs, you earn a Permanence Shard. You can spend this to make an FTE permanent, even if it's already ended. Forming bonds and exposing killers during trials increases the groups' Innocence, a level shared between everyone. Innocence is used to cast helpful spells during trials, equivalent to Lifelines from previous games. (This is just flavour, and Lifelines aren't actually restricted by how many FTEs this game gets.)
"And we're out. See ya!" With another flash of light, Aardok vanished. Zofra disappeared as well, though no-one caught the moment they did. Everyone finally felt their muscles responding to them again. They turned to look at each other, momentarily lost for words. "What the fuck?"

Everyone had a lot of questions, but the demons hadn't stuck around to answer them. There was a lot of confused, terrified talking over each other, until Kameron shouted to get everyone's attention. [Kameron's theme: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkbgGmMYBHg]"Come on, let's focus up! I don't know what's going on here - I'm sure none of us do - but it's too early to panic. We still don't understand the situation we're in. Let's figure this out!" With various degrees of willingness, the players tried to hold it together for the time being. First things first, they examined the principal's office, trying to make sure everything really was as it seemed. They didn't learn anything new, however. The door had been locked from the inside, and Isadora had barricaded it for further measure. By the looks of it, she'd shoved all the furniture against the walls to make room, then proceeded with whatever arcane ritual she'd performed to summon those demons. The office had giant, unopenable windows at the back. The view outside... clearly wasn't Earth anymore. Outside the school was a chaotic hellscape of clashing ice and lava, the two elements paradoxically coexisting despite being in opposition, vying endlessly for supremacy. The sun was bright and harsh, yet somehow the ground wasn't lit by it, and was instead only illuminated by the lava. A few vaguely-humanoid figures could be seen toiling in the distance. "666 years, right?" Hella suggested. Most of the group turned away from the view uncomfortably. With nothing else to gain here, everyone headed back to the elevator. It was an awkward, silent ride back down to to the foyer. "We're... not going to kill anyone, right?" Yugi finally said, hoping she spoke for everyone. "We're better than that." "Right! We won't listen to those demons!" Nico replied, glad someone had finally said it. The tension in the room lowered, and everyone voiced their general agreements. "I uh, guess classes are cancelled for now!" Kameron said, chuckling nervously. "GODDAMMIT! WHY MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE?" Ige suddenly screamed, bolting from the group and running for the entrance. He tried to wrench the double doors open, but part of one was melted by lava on the outside, and the other was frozen shut. The landscape seen through the glass doors was just the same as it had been when viewed from up in the office. The shaking from earlier must have been due to the school being ripped from its place on Earth and taken to the demon realm. "Calm yourself!" Hawk called out sternly, approaching Ige and putting a hand on his shoulder. "Our first order of business should be inspecting the school. You won't achieve anything out there." He glanced disdainfully outside. This did seem like the best option for now. Everyone set about for what would be their third tour of the school. [Map: i.imgur.com/duVPKH1.png ] [#spoiler=Main Foyer] The foyer was still as ridiculously grandiose as ever. Two staircases flanked the giant Leonardo da Vinci statue, who was uncharacteristically towering over everyone. The room was decorated, but didn't otherwise have anything of note.
[#spoiler=West Wing, 1F] Through the west door on the ground floor, the players entered the corridor that among other things led to classroom 1-A. There were a number of other classrooms here too, as well as the Science Labs, Art room and Music room. Everything was a complete mess now, however, due to the earlier shaking. Stuff was knocked over and a few things were broken. The corridor also led to the cafeteria, which was quite luxurious (or it had been, before the shaking). At the back was an excellent kitchen. Felix couldn't help but feel a bit excited as he took a look around, despite the situation.
[#spoiler=West Wing, 2F] A staircase near the cafeteria led up to the second floor. Much of this floor was dedicated to the student dorms. Everyone's belongings were here: the school had been quite relaxed about what they could bring. A door led back to the school proper. There were various rooms here, most notably the Library.
[#spoiler=East Wing, 1F] Following the corridor around took the players to one of the foyer staircases. They headed down, then over to the east wing. The ground floor notably housed the very impressive Gym. Situated conveniently nearby was the Infirmary. Further back were various faculty spaces: the Staff Room, some offices including the Security Office, and a Maintenance Room. Various chemicals had been spilled in here due to the shaking, creating an awful smell that forced everyone back when they first opened the door. Probably best to stay clear.
[#spoiler=East Wing, 2F] Right next to the Maintenance Room was one of two staircases in the east wing that went up to the second floor. This one took them through the Staff Dorms, which were largely identical to the student ones, though there were less of them. Through a door and back into the school proper, there were another set of corridors to various rooms. There was a Computer Lab, as well as a number of Workshops. One room stood out from all the rest, however. It had been something boring and unmemorable before, but now a label on the door read 'Armoury'. Inside were a number of horrible, twisted-looking medieval-era weapons, scattered about haphazardly. Presumably Aardok had kindly provided them.
All the doors and windows everyone checked during the tour had been sealed shut, either melted or frozen in place. Kameron forced one of the melted doors open at one point, and everyone got a good look of the outside world. It was a pretty terrible sight, and the warring ice and lava extended as far as they could see in all directions. It was clear there was no escape to be found out there. He shut the door again in resignation, not wanting the outside temperature to mess with the school interior. It seemed as though something, probably magic, was keeping the school mostly protected from the elements, but it was best to be safe. A few hours later, it was found that the door had already sealed shut again, with material on the outside having melted to fill the cracks. (You're free to make up other rooms as required during RP. They won't be referenced during the murder; it can safely be assumed that only locations named on the map are relevant.) The tour eventually led back to the foyer. Everyone was gathered here. What now?

Hawk strode amongst the group again, counting heads. "Twelve, thirteen, fourteen... Good. All present and accounted for." He nodded to himself, a short and sharp movement, before resuming his counting.
He had dropped his overcoat, his hand alternately tightening and relaxing on the scabbard now shown clearly at his side; a worn and beaten thing, covered in scratches, burns, and... Darker spots.
In his pacing, he paused, looking Calvin in the eye. "Mr. Marston. Normally, I would not do this, but the situation has changed."
From his hip, he pulled out the cowboy's revolver and the holster, holding them out.
"Use it if you feel your life or the life of another is in danger. Am I clear?"

She hastily rolled up the sleeves of her sweater and looked around cautiously.

"To think, I'd encounter such creatures during my own life..." Mikoto mumbled to themselves, paying little attention to whoever might hear them.
"Fret not, friends! We're all allies in the same ship. None will risk rocking the boat, yes? It would be ideal for us to keep level heads, and fight back against our fearsome, demonic opponents."
"What I mean to say is... We're all in this together. Let's keep our spirits strong."

"... Looks like we're thrown into a 'kill or be killed' situation." Calvin muttered to himself.
Then he heard his name being called as he turns to make eye contact with Hawk. He listened to Hawk's request.
"Understood, Hawk. I'll ensure nobody get hurt." The cowboy said as he accepts the revolver and the holster from Hawk. He strapped the holster around his waist, before he started twirling the revolver on his finger. It felt good to have the cold iron back in his hand. "It's good to have my cannon back. Still, what in the tarnation..."
With that being said, the cowboy puts his revolver back in the holster.

Hawk nodded again at the cowboy, then strode back through the crowd, but... Something wiggled atop his head. It wiggled a little more, shifted slightly, then...
Out popped two tufted, feathery ears that swayed under the wind of his passage, even as he started his count anew.

"It kind of is, isn't it. More interesting than seeing the entire school again..." Faye sighed, looking out through a frozen over window. She had asked to just stay behind before the full tour of the school, but begrudgingly went along with it for safety's sake. Upon catching sight of Hawk's new pair of ears, she promptly checked her own. They still came off when she pulled them up. Okay. Okay.

Yves backed up to the wall nearest where everyone was currently standing, slumping to the ground and curling her knees up to her chest. "No, no, no, no, no..." She clutched at her head with both hands, fingernails digging into her scalp and mussing up her hair, her whole body shaking.
"This is just a nightmare, right? I- I was having a dream about actually making friends at my new school I'm going to tomorrow, and them actually talking to me, only for it to turn into a nightmare with demons, and someone d-dying, and... I've just gotta wake up...! Because this is all just a bad dream... everything's fine, and you just need to wake up and you can talk to Grandpa and Nana in the morning and everything'll be fine..."

Mikoto tilts their head, somewhat confused. "Perhaps I've been misinformed. I was under the impression that Westerners had a better grip on this than the people of my homeland..." "Although I've not been able to witness one myself before this encounter, stories of such beings have been passed down hand to hand, mouth to mouth, from my family and friends in the village. I was under the impression that the same was true for you all, as well."

Felix's pupils dilated, and his breathing grew short and ragged, coming out in hurried, panicked pants. The magnificent kitchen calmed his nerves somewhat, but clearly not enough. He frantically looked around to the others surrounding him, stepping a bit away into his own little corner.
"W-We're gonna die... Oh, god, there-- there's freakin' demons here...!" he breathlessly muttered to himself. He then shook his head and lightly slapped himself. He had to focus. He looked back up, eyes flickering over everyone... until he noticed something a bit different about Hawk.
"Uhh, M-Mister Hawk, sir... You, um, you got a little something..."
He awkwardly motioned to the top of his head.

Hawk turned as Su-Ah addressed him, a brow raised. That brow raised further upon her gesticulations, but he still reached up and...
"What."
Touched his new ears. If they were ears.
"... It appears they are indeed," he finally answered stiffly. "How peculiar. This world seems to have some very strange effects..."
He let his hand fall down to his side, thinking. Then, he held up his arm, like one would do for a bird of prey. His brows met, and he thunderously exclaimed:
"Cyfarwydd!!"
There was a bright flash, and from the sky came an angry screech, as a bird burst into existence, spiraling around the group before tucking its wings in and alighting upon Hawk's arm.
The beast, if it could even be called that, had green feathers atop the crown of its head that faded first into white for the body and then into gold across the wingtips and the tail. A cruel black beak opened again to screech as the creature unfurled its wings, beating the air before tucking them in again, its beady eyes surveying the people like they were naught but prey before it. Even on Hawk's arm, it was clear the creature would stand half as tall as the man, were it not hunched over to maintain balance, its long talons already fully wrapped around his arm.

"Well! I am not sure how we should proceed. This seems to be reality... I would've woken up by this point with all the questioning of reality and such..." Su-Ah spoke, assuming her experiences were universal.
She frowned a bit when she looked at Yves' state, but before she could say anything, a bird appeared.
"ACK! A creature! How did you do that? I want one too."

Yugi scribbles in her notebook a look of slight sadness in her eyes. Those looking over her shoulder would probably see the following prominent on the page:
Clubs to start: * Yugioh! - Mr. Perez? * Adventuring - Mr. Fields * Swordfighting - Hawk * Religion - Mr. Magno - Cancelled :(
She stands up urgently as Hawk summons his bird.
"It seems like Hawk and the other adults are capable of working on a plan! As students, we should focus on staying positive and helping the adults if they need our help!"

"Whoa..."
Felix's panic was (mostly) dispelled as he saw Hawk's familiar suddenly appear. He stared at it, amazement evident in his bright green eyes, and couldn't help but admire its beauty. Sure, it looked like an intimidating bird of prey, but it had lovely coloration. He'd definitely have to try that spell out soon.

Whatever melancholy Faye felt was quickly dispelled as she watched the fantastic display with stars in her eyes. She approached the familiar (and by extension, Hawk) with a hand outstretched and the first smile anyone in the room had seen from her, not even acknowledging the fearsome look it gave. "Can I pet it...? Can I?"
The bird squawked again, shifting its weight, even as Hawk stared at it, disquieted. Then it turned to watch the approaching bunny, and ever so slowly... Spread a wing out at her. Like an invitation. After a moment, Hawk shook himself free of his stupor and, careful to not disturb the bird, turned to the rest of the class. "Right, then. First class of the year starts now. Line up, line up! We'll be practicing how to summon... Whatever this is!"
