To add on some more to this:
I quickly scrapped the teacher, the anarchist, and the billionaire because I had no ideas for them. Even personality-wise I only had a little bit of an idea for the anarchist.
A character that was around for a long time but didn’t make it into the final game was “random lady from the supermarket who had given melanie a compliment like 2 years ago and that she became obsessed with.” This character was supposed to receive notes from a secret admirer (read: stalker) and have a written-only relationship with Melanie before the game. This character got rolled into the Incel character as I struggled to find ideas for either that weren’t cooler if they applied to both.
Ganglion was more or less the same idea (a weird randomized robot) for a long time, but I eventually thought up the idea to have this robot be the “player” and for the game to be like a VN. This really changed the way I thought about the game.
Nancy was pretty early on but was supposed to be Bobbi’s mom or some unrelated character that Melanie had a vendetta against. Melanie would torture Nancy for Bobbi and Bobbi would be like what the heck.
For a while I wanted the solution to Ganglion be that eventually in room of determination end, Bobbi becomes completely 4-dimensional and disappears from the game. Then you would all go back to timelines and play them without Bobbi and be sad. This eventually got separated into being Tabitha, as I thought it was really fun to have this be a mystery from the start. And on the true ending you still get to save both Bobbi and Tabitha.
Ganglion being a dog was a wacky idea that was on-again off-again. There was a stretch of time where I wasn’t sure if I wanted to give the butcher an animal companion but when I figured out that the animal companion saving them could mirror how they are saved from the game I decided to go for it.
There was a while where I wanted some character in ailing health (like a grandmother) that Melanie wanted to preserve forever in the eternity game. I played with this idea a lot but it eventually became that Melanie wanted to stop Dahlia from publishing her horrible book and ruining her franchise forever. And stop Bobbi from leaving her to live with Tabitha.
Marvin didn’t change too much because I always had this idea where he chooses to kill everyone but then that timeline is like a weird “dead end” where the game breaks and then Marvin asks why he did that and Ganglion tells him. This is very similar to the final game. Him being the clone of a serial killer was something that was added before I decided Melanie would also have a clone.
Sophilia and Datakot were definitely the last two characters I added. I had an idea that I wanted to foreshadow that this whole game was for a VN and then the character of Sophilia was made. She would be Melanie’s descendant and live in a weird family because of her. And I had the idea of both her and Ganglion controlling the robot and I was like, “this needs to happen.” Grandma controlling the robot was something I added when I was charting out specific timelines so there could be a confrontation with the mastermind before learning her identity. Grandpa being in the lion was an ad-lib during the game I added in because Grandpa was in Sophilia’s backstory.
Datakot is based off my aunt and I really tried to use that as a way to make the author character fun. At every turn, I wasn’t sure about the author character because I had no idea what her personality would be. I finally kinda got something and put it in the role pm, but I have to thank dootdoot for bringing her to life and writing all the BoSS ending stuff. That really helped the character and made her grow in my mind. eventually I had the ideas about how Datakot could change Guillermo’s memories and was like “I need an author that seems cool.”
Originally the pet in the basement was just an animal but when Marvin thought it could be Sunbeam I went, “Oh, that’s a good idea.”
There were always ideas for early branches. Originally Ganglion end was just the robot falling over and breaking immediately and sand pouring out of it. But I had no idea how to make that carry any emotional weight or be satisfying for the Ganglion player.
Guillermo was the first twist idea and he stayed 99.9% the same the whole time. His ending was not supposed to be a plot lock but I decided to make it one when I realized I hadn’t made the conclusion that Guillermo is just some guy who is lying to everyone logical enough for people to say it, oops!

Very cool stuff!
So was the Eddie Alt also all ad-libbed? It did stand out to me that Alt-III was like an entire timeline while the other Alts were random extras. (Not in a bad way, mind you.)

Eddie alt was pretty real. Alt ii was just going to be the original Ganglion end where the robot crashes.
Alt iii was intended as well.
The main change was adding Garo to alt ii.

How did you end up deciding everyone’s names, by the way?

Post by Doctor Nanjo M.D. on Feb 3, 2023 18:53:09 GMT
Melanie - Wanted something nicknameable and feminine. Melanie stuck early on as it was similar to Melody (siren) but not the same. Last name was a reference to the garden of Eden, etc.
Roberta - masculine name with cute nickname. For some reason Bobbi gives me the impression of a kid on the run. Moss just fit sonically. A lot of the time I imagined Bobbi as a softball player.
Ren - wanted a shadowy name and ended up making one up that was also quirky. I also thought of Raven, Dusk, etc. Last name was “Iavolo” which sounded like evil. This is maybe a remnant of the butcher version of the character.
Marvin - I heard Marvin recently and went, “This should be a character’s name.” I think it fit with Marvin’s personality. Garritt was just a name that felt like it fit but also was kinda gritty like Marvin’s life was supposed to be.
Tyler Greer - obviously this name got changed but I always felt Tyler was a very versatile boys name. My initial inspiration for the character was some guy I saw in sweats and headphones and I thought, “that guy is highly different from the usual characters I come up with. Greer worked well with Tyler. I am happy with Grayson Greer though.
Sophilia - I wanted a name that sounds like it’s a really young kid’s since she’s from the future. So I thought of Sophia and then changed it to Sophilia without realizing that it wasn’t just new-age sounding but it wasn’t even a real name. Glas was chosen as a last name as a clue.
Guillermo - I love names that begin with G and Guillermo is a classic. I think Guillermo deserved a name that sounded like it was from some romance novel with a slightly foreign male lead. Glas sounded right and I loved the alliteration.
Ganglion - this character was just angel or ??? for a long time in my notes. I had a vision the robot suit would be a weird looking animal costume and settled on lion. I wanted a weird term for like a thought or a dream. I found “Ganglion” while looking around and went, “Oh well that has to be their name.”
Datakot - I wanted the author to have some ridiculous pen name with lots of letters like Tolkien or GRRM or JKR, etc. Eventually I found Kotter as a last name and wanted an old-fashioned first name that played well with it. Daisy Taylor Kotter had a lot of assonance, but then doot’s change to Dahlia worked as well. Then I wanted her to be DTK but settled on Datakot as it was more the nickname of a niche community.
Nancy - Was supposed to have some hard-butt name so I chose “Boss”. I figured that would be a nickname so I tried to pick an old name for the first name. Eventually I settled with Nancy because I know some Nancy’s that are strict. Goodfellow is another G last name that played well with Nancy and also gave her a mobster tough guy flair.
Tabitha - I just remember thinking “Tabitha is a good name I don’t see used too often” and then later on it seemed suitable for the dead character. Tabitha is a name that seems very brooding to me.

Here's my opinions on the characters. Note I tried to separate the characters from how the players played them as much as I could; I'm primarily reviewing the characters as Nanjo wrote them.
[#spoiler=Character reviews] Melanie: All-round perfect. In the novelised version with the power of editing, it would be very cool to implement JM's idea of having different timelines be "routes" for Mel to romance her various targets, but even without that Mel wasn't lacking anything. As I mentioned before, I really like that so many things happened in the game that 'Zero' really hadn't expected or planned, including her own ending backfiring.
Roberta: By contrast, Bobbi felt a bit like she didn't have much to do most of the game. Her big moment only really came at the very end, which is awkward because while it's "Bobbi END" it's also the true end for every player. I think the issue stems from her existence largely revolving around Mel, and sometimes Tabitha; there wasn't much Bobbi-specific stuff. Though in novelised form I guess Bobbi's the protagonist, so it would work there.
Ren: Very cool character, but while I appreciate the concept of being a random guy, it did leave him disconnected from events a lot of the time. He was definitely carried by his personality; if he'd been Eddie from the start, as much as Eddie's cool, it wouldn't have really worked. To be fair, I guess Ren did get a good few hero moments which helps involve him in the plot. Though that's then undermined by Ganglion changing history to undo his sacrifices XD
Marvin: His character was given plenty. He was our main window into Tabitha at first: Bobbi was mostly long-distance with her, while Marvin was her neighbour and could talk more about her. He was more in-the-know about her being stalked and kidnapped, too. Marvin also had all the Sunbeam stuff, which sort of tied into Ganglion, and then the serial killer stuff and cloning stuff, the latter of which foreshadowed who 'Zero' was. He had some relevance to so many routes.
Grayson: Grayson's a bit tricky. Ultimately he was the 'antagonist' character so there was always a role for him in every scene. He just lacks a cool twist or detail, I guess. It turning out that he worked with Nuwmere on the game wasn't a big surprise when he was already the closest we had to an evil player character. He does do a lot to demonstrate Mel's possessive, controlling personality at least, including the cool Garo stuff. I suppose he has the Bobbi problem where he exists more for Mel's character and doesn't stand on his own all that much. His ending was neat but also highlights how he didn't really have much of his own, and had to find it after the game was over.
Sophilia: Despite in some sense not having much of a tie to most of the cast, I feel like she somehow ended up with plenty to work with. Existing in a timeline separate from most, including the 'true' one, is cool and tragic in a good way. She's her own character but also acts as the primary focus for the Lion 'character', who gets free points for always being a primary mystery of the game. It's cool that Nuwmere didn't really plan for her to be there, even if she then adapted to her presence. Then she gets to foreshadow weird clues like "wait what's mom's vase doing here?" Ultimately she somehow manages to have a lot going on despite not even living in the same time or even universe as the cast.
Guillermo: I'm biased but it felt like his loud personality meant he could always contribute to a scene even when it wasn't about him. He had plenty of plot relevance too, between BOSS, David Black and Mel. David Black's surname matching the big tech company Mel bought stuff from is kinda misleading though. I could see that being by design, where the twist is that David Black is just some loser who Mel paid to act as someone else rather than this huge big deal guy, but I don't remember the plot specifically mentioning that.
Guille's one of those characters where their entire existence is a mystery: characters like that always get free points because that mystery carries with them the entire game. Obviously you can't/shouldn't make every character be like Guille or the Lion though. The main thing is the 'free points' their concept gives them means they can sustain themselves even without being given much more, E.g. Ghost from NG7 was a faceless amnesiac but had enough free points that she could stand on her own two feet as a character. By contrast I think Ren had a personality that could carry him but he wasn't propped up by any overarching mystery to make up for his lack of plot ties. Becoming Eddie when he died was neat but didn't feel core to his character at all, like it could happen to anyone.
Ganglion: He was given plenty. Part of the Lion, a 4D being like Sunbeam (and later Guille). Weird perspective on the world that works with how the Eternity Game is. Gets to kill Nuwmere in his ending, gets to summon Guille that one time. I think the big thing that gives him constant relevance is that he was also Button, though. Without that detail he'd feel lacking and would feel too alien and distant from the cast; less of a character and more of a supporting NPC or something. But thanks to being joined to Button his whole character feels complete and present. Conversely, while Button and Ganglion make Ren's overall concept cool, they also mean that Ren's primary gimmick isn't even really his own.
Datakot: Cool character, but perhaps a bit lacking in relevance. She got content in her ending but otherwise wasn't quite as involved as she could have been. Part of this problem is probably that every character gets an individual ending, so with 10 characters that means only 1/10 routes is relevant to her. A good cast needs a mix of characters, some with lots of involvement, some with less, so maybe the issue is more with the game's 10 ending structure than with Dahlia.
Nancy: Very similar opinions as with Datakot. Her ending was good but until then Nancy wasn't given much to do. This stands out more due to Nancy's character, by design, being more subdued and quiet, so she gets involved less. Maybe a bit more should have been done regarding Nancy being the camp counsellor that one time Mel was there? In hindsight I appreciate that Nancy's limp was due to Mel being spiteful and injuring her right at the start, that gave her some additional relevance. I think it would have worked better if that happened 'on-screen' so it was more obviously a big deal, as now that I think about it I probably dismissed it in part because it happened so early on, while I was still trying to absorb details of the game, and we couldn't even see the characters yet.
Actually in general it's probably good to avoid any significant plot details at the very beginning, as they get lost in the initial scuffle as every player finds their feet and tries to learn the other characters. Nancy's limp became a "character detail" in my head rather than a "plot detail"; even despite Guille treating her injury, I ended up forgetting that she didn't just always have a limp from before the game. In general, when I looked back at the garden posts, I found I'd forgotten a lot of details that were revealed at the time. So much was going on and I was still trying to familiarise myself with the characters and general game properties.
I do agree with a lot of this ^ when it comes to characters sorta not feeling like they had much to be doing. I did try to do a lot as Nancy though and I do think in the end especially near the last timelines as more of her relevance came out with Tabitha and the Mel reveal it felt good. I can't speak to how it would've been to play as Ren/Grayson/Datakot though. But I liked Nancy a lot and I only felt those pains near the start/first half of the game.

To elaborate more on Ren, I definitely felt like a spectator to basically everything that happened, spare for maybe the bit relating to Ganglion and Button, but even then, Ren never got to have a conversation with Ganglion like how Marvin did with Sunbeam.
Although to be completely honest, being a spectator from a player standpoint wasn't a horrible thing. And from a character standpoint, he was a fantastic character on his own. But from a story standpoint, Ren felt very shoehorned in. He could've literally been anyone. But he just happened to be Ren.
However, that being said, I had a LOT of fun coming up with and acting out his various eccentricities. I want to make a character just like him in a D&D campaign or something similar if it means getting a chance to play him again.

Firm but fair. Some of this could be rectified by changing some existing stuff to be more spread out (like have Nancy remember the lion, have more traps and interactions with Nuwmere taunt and target her, etc.)
Ren’s whole point is he’s some guy but him being in the game allows him to be free of the game. It woulda been cool to have him maybe kidnapped with his briefcase from work just to add some extra, and then give him a tie to a player through maybe some extra story beat. I’d want it to not feel contrived or coincidental, but I could see the need for it.
I might replace some sections that were more “generic” (torture room was just for Grandma, really but she can show up in room of Fire) and try to make them more specific to more cast members.

Maybe instead of framing it as Eddie or Ren (which was fun but limiting) I would make it “if all the people along the interstate that night who were kidnapped in this world or that, Ren was the only one who could help.”

Post by Panda on Feb 7, 2023 9:58:55 GMT
Wildcard idea, but Ren could be a private investigator (with a dog assistant) who was trying to track down Tabitha after she was kidnapped the few weeks prior. Him getting close to the source happened to put him in the way of Grayson's search for a rando to kidnap. This way he'd have connection to the plot without being pure coincidence, while still being an outsider Mel didn't plan for who could escape the game when his dog warns him away from the capture area. Just as an example. As much as Ren being unconnected is his superpower, it also makes him a weird inclusion to the plot, in my opinion. I might replace some sections that were more “generic” (torture room was just for Grandma, really but she can show up in room of Fire) and try to make them more specific to more cast members. Yeah that would be a good idea, actually. E.g. give Dahlia a room taken straight from one of her earlier BOSS books, which is Mel's way of trying to remind her where she came from. But Dahlia doesn't really remember the specifics at this point because it was just throwaway YA nonsense, or because of her slump, or whichever. Ways to play up everyone's character traits while foreshadowing their purpose in the game.

Cool to see Mel favored. I thought it was a really exciting Role PM but I felt like I didn't get to play her quite the way I wanted and was afraid it would come off awkward. I guess I imagined the "normal Mel" to be a little more loud of a personality but there were moments. My big complaint with Mel storywise is just that I think the clone is unneeded. Not really being a Knox purist, and I do think it can work in some cases but it did just kind of feel like a mystery cheat code. Maybe that was Mel's intention.
For the ending Nanjo just said Mel would have to release everyone and I could kind of go in any direction from there. I was gonna have Mel go insane playing the game over and over for the rest of her life but then the Guille stuff pivoted it. But the implication is that Mel's clone ended up that way which I'm bringing up just cause it comes up in character reviews.
Also as I said I was kind of confused about some things so if Mel ever said anything incorrect you can assume she might be incorrect or exaggerating or something.
[#spoiler=Other characters] I liked Ren a lot and he's probably the most memorable in the game to me. A lot of that is due to how he was played. I imagine with other players (myself included) I could end up feeling so disconnected and that might come through in the character.
I like the idea of the lion but something about the concept didn't fully come through to me. It feels like there needed to be an extra twist to fully give it all that wow factor. Like Sophilia interacting with the game from the future could've added some extra twist on a larger scale to the true nature of the game and I won't make a ZE comparison for spoilers but you can think of VLR's true setting for this.
Anyway, I enjoyed Sophilia and Ganglion both a lot. I wish they had equal "screentime" but I get that's player activity and all the twists around Ganglion were really cool... though the lion and Ganglion is one of the parts I am confused about. I had thought he was a morphogenetic angel, then I thought he was just Button, but now I'm back to my initial guess. Is that all there is to it?
Grayson was great and I loved interacting with him and that he was more of a comedic relief villain. I get that I have a "special perspective" on him and my only suggestion for future improvement was that he could be a bit more subtle and manipulative (smarter even!) without losing the essence of the character.
Bobbi I think needed an extra twist cause my hot take is that Sophilia should be the main character *dabs*. But yea Bobbi is a character that found hard to work with not because of PB or her writing but just for Mel's role in the game. From my role PM I had thought Mel would be OBSESSED with Bobbi and then Nanjo said she actually didn't really care about her so that was how I kind of started it. But I feel like the portrayal of that landed somewhere in the middle (I wasn't trying to go against Nanjo's wishes or anything and just sort of played it scene by scene, so I'll leave it to the readers). But yea ultimately I do think she worked in the end but she does feel relatively minor even though feeling like a major character for most of the game.
Marvin I think was the strongest supporting character and he had the nicest ending. I think Tabitha could've taken the role of the old woman from VLR and that would've immediately raised the stakes for Marvin, Bobbi, and Nancy. Her identity would have to be a mystery to the player for things to be interesting though and maybe it would've made Mel look more obvious.
Datakot was also good, but felt like she didn't get her "moment". For her ending Nanjo told me not to kill Datakot so I assumed that Datakot would somehow triumph over Mel and beat her. So when her ending finally happened I was just like "huh?" and didn't understand really understand what had happened but that could just be me!
Guille was great. Mystery character with a large presence, contributes a lot to the story and who doesn't love the characters who bring up decent points in mystery dissection? As I said I had a different ending planned for Mel, so when Guille offered to be with her it really shook things up but it was cool to be given a new ending opportunity.
Nancy was good. Don't have much to say but that despite being more minor she does ultimately tie into the plot in multiple good enough ways. I also liked the twist behind Mel and Nancy and I think it's just a cool way to give make a very minor plot connection feel suddenly major with Nancy taking the toy (and this detail was only in a puzzle room but Mel mentioned her favorite animal was a lion so there ya go :p)
Tabitha was a very strange character. I didn't really find myself invested in her and therefore didn't really get any satisfaction from her relationship with Bobbi. Maybe I'm method reading too much but I just don't feel like there ever needed to be a timeline where she was alive. Maybe there's some clues in timelines that leads players to think she's alive, but then the true ending twist comes where everybody starts at the beginning of the game and Mel reveals that she killed Tabitha weeks ago and is long dead.
Also if any of this sounds like a criticism of Nanjo or the story it's not. Nanjo was always cool at answering questions and was very good about adding small things for me even if I said it wasn't a big deal. He also edited out the cat ears because I'm awful at it but yea most of my criticisms are just either things to keep in mind if there's ever a rewrite or things that I personally prefer that I would've preferred to see that maybe wouldn't vibe with others so there ya go.
All that being said I do have a spectacularly absurd but satisfying idea for the Eternity Game VN
[#spoiler=] The cast is exactly the same as this game. We can say Marvin is the player character. Mel is still Nuwmere, but Marvin is just a clone of her. [Fill in more details here]
It's all yours, Nanjo. Free of charge.
It's kinda wild to me how unplanned the ending was, despite how it tied various things together. (Making use of the cloning facility to make a Guille separate from David was unplanned, Nanjo came up with that when I asked what would even happen to Guille after the game. Guille staying with Mel kinda mirrors Datakot's ending, where she realised her Nuwmere was, ultimately, lonely; Mel!Nuwmere is similar, and it's Datakot's own fictional character who tries to rectify that. Yet Datakot's Nuwmere idea was also unplanned!) Not a bad thing really, as the player autonomy was cool, I guess it's just a surprise it worked out so well. Feels like it could easily have become a bit directionless and anticlimactic.
As for Tabitha, I missed my chance to have Guille talk about it in the game, but it's notable we only ever got to see Tabitha at her worst, after she'd been through hell millions of times. He was going to lament that he never got to know her before the timeline count reached many digits, as she probably used to be a much nicer, all-round more likable person. So that could be an angle that's explored a little more in the hypothetical 2.0 version of the game, I thought it was an interesting concept.
I do agree about Mel's clone feeling extraneous. Marvin's plot does at least foreshadow it though. I was never clear on if the two Mels had identical personalities or not; it was always surprising that Mel would happily die knowing her clone would go on to marry one of her capture targets, given her clone is still a different person from her. But maybe that just shows how detached from reality she is, viewing the world almost like it's fictional.

I agree on their ending. It's usually weird to bring these to a close after everything is answered but it did wrap things up well enough.
And they were pretty much identical. Mel mentions they're a "hivemind" which probably isn't accurate but you could probably assume they have an extreme empathy (similar to identical twins but stronger since they're clones). But Mel definitely felt pretty OP in that she had a clone and an entirely different player to control.

re: dahlia being dead while being alive in a bunch of timelines I wouldn't really necessarily put this on the game or the format. like I'm willing to admit i was inactive during this game and I'm sorry about that it's just a lot of shit happened towards the middle and this kind of inactivity and checking out tends to snowball from there especially when you actually just didn't expect the game to last all the way until after graduation. so uh yeah kinda like this post coming in way too late sorry about that too. so uh yeah i just want to make it clear i enjoyed the parts of the game I was alive (irl) to enjoy them for it's kind of my fault dahlia ended up not as good as she could have been gg man gg hello new people

Wow, I appreciate all the thoughts. I'm a bit ashamed of how Bobbi's story went down, since she was supposed to be more independent and epic. She probably does need another "twist" and I would probably make it different from what it originally was (her eventually going down the same path as Tabitha after being the most awakened character to the field). Also Mel is supposed to be obsessed with Bobbi, so maybe I misrepresented the story on accident (Sad).
Ganglion is a spirit but one that was originally just interested in the life of Yappie (Ren's original dog) and then went on to be Button and then be Ganglion in the game. At each step they had more autonomy and ego.
I might do a summary but Dahlia's ending is that just like Guillermo, she wrote the story of Nuwmere a certain way. Just like David acted as Guillermo, Mel was acting as Nuwmere. So depending on how Datakot writes her ending, then Mel would be more inclined to leave someone alive so she isn't lonely. It probably could have been better-written.

Huh, turns out I also didn't know what happened in Dahlia's ending. Whoops.

OG Survey thoughts before NBP's (Gold is best character, Silver are alternates, White is Maybe, Red is Don't Do This)
